SPECIFICATION EXAMPLE

Imagery across double-page spreads

Generous image sequences and precise details depend on the interplay of layout, paper and print. For images spanning the gutter, the way the binding opens also matters.

Discuss the specification

More pages need a carefully coordinated specification

As page counts grow, format and paper affect weight, spine width and handling. At the same time, images, tables and longer texts must remain easy to read.

  • Choose the format around content and use

Tables, product overviews and photographs need suitable page formats. We consider how the publication will be used and allow sufficient clearance from the gutter in bound editions.

  • Match paper to images, text and tables

Surface and paper whiteness influence images and colour areas. We consider coated and uncoated papers alongside colour reproduction requirements.

  • Consider show-through and overall weight

Opacity describes how little of the reverse side shows through. We balance paper weight, thickness and opacity to keep tables clear and the publication easy to handle.

  • Plan the cover and inner pages separately

A sturdy cover protects the inner pages. Spine width is calculated from the actual paper and final page count before the cover design is completed.

Binding must suit the page count and intended use

Regular browsing, targeted reference or long-term storage: alongside page count, the intended use determines the right binding.

  • Perfect binding for longer publications

A straight spine provides space for the title and edition. When preparing artwork, we consider how the binding opens, especially for spreads and content close to the gutter.

  • Saddle stitching for compact editions

Folded sheets are stapled along the spine. Page counts are usually planned in multiples of four; the maximum size depends on paper thickness.

  • Other bindings for specialist requirements

Loop stitching for filing, Wire-O for folding pages back completely, or hardcover for a rigid book cover: we discuss the right specification with you.

  • Highlight titles and design elements

Blind embossing, hot foil stamping and spot varnish add selective accents. We coordinate material, artwork and embellishment files with prepress.

Plan quantities and updates together

How long will the content remain current, and how many copies are needed on publication day? We plan the printing method, quantity and versions together.

Digital printing for smaller quantities

Without fixed printing plates, shorter runs, different languages and changing content can be produced. Where updates are frequent, a smaller initial run followed by reprints may make sense.

Discuss your print run

Offset printing for larger runs

Printing plate and setup costs are spread across more copies, making this attractive for larger runs. Depending on the design, additional spot colours can form part of the specification.

Language editions and price versions

For each edition, we define the quantity, approved file version and delivery destination. Language editions can have different print runs. Where prices change frequently, a separate price list insert may be useful.

Plan your versions

There is no fixed quantity threshold between digital and offset printing. Page count, paper and finishing are considered together in the quotation.

From the initial discussion to delivery

An existing layout, a previous edition or initial specifications: early discussion helps coordinate the specification, artwork preparation and delivery date.

  1. Requirements and deadline

Clarify the format, page count, quantities, language editions and delivery locations. We discuss any outstanding specification questions together.

  2. Specification and quotation

Choose the paper, binding, printing and embellishment. Packaging, shipping and storage are also included in the quotation.

  3. Artwork checks and approval

We check the technical details. You check figures, prices and text and explicitly approve each file version.

  4. Print the run

Production uses the agreed materials. For multiple editions, the defined versions and quantities apply.

  5. Bind and finish

Folding, gathering, binding or stitching, embellishing and trimming to the agreed specification.

  6. Deliver or store

Deliver to the agreed addresses, mail with a covering letter, or store part of the run for later call-off.

Questions about catalogue and report printing

To prepare a quotation, we mainly need the quantity, format, page count and desired specification. Different language editions, embellishments and delivery locations also affect the cost. If paper or binding is still undecided, we can advise before quoting.
